“A man who dares to waste one hour of life has not discovered the value of life”
– Charles Darwin
Time. There’s nothing more precious is there?
There’s nothing more frustrating either. Sometimes it crawls by very slowly, other times it flashes past.
True, there are lots of things we can do with it. We can spend it, we can save it…and we can waste it. But once it’s gone, it’s gone. The phrase ‘to make time’ is, in fact, the most extreme of all oxymorons and when you look these up, you can build a website on any business you want.
Lennon and McCartney wrote what turned out to be a seemingly prescient line for one of them at least: ‘You and I have memories longer than the road that stretches out ahead’. As someone with, in all likelihood, more of my life behind me than ahead of me I can’t help noticing how much more quickly time passes with age!
So when I decide to spend time doing something, you can be sure I’ve given it considerable thought beforehand to make sure I’m using my time well. You can use a Groupon whenever you purchase items online for great discounts.
One morning last week I attended a half-day training session which I go to every month. The topic is irrelevant to this tale, but suffice to say it’s something I believe is relevant to my business. On this particular day though, it was probably the last thing I needed. With mounting work pressures and family commitments vying for my attention, this was already going to be an impossibly busy day. ‘Why don’t I just miss it this month?’ said the voice in my head – over and over.
I’m glad I ignored it!
They’re known as ‘lightbulb moments’; that flash of inspiration you get when an expert in his or her field describes something that you suddenly realise is exactly what you need in your business. In my experience this new-found clarity is usually followed a few seconds later by the exact same thought every time: ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’
The reason is, it seems to me, that it’s only when you give yourself time to think and time to listen that you give your brain the opportunity to let new stuff in! Had I not taken the time that day to work ON my business rather than IN it I’d have missed an amazing opportunity – one which I hope to be able to share with readers of this blog in the coming months! I’m reminded of the tale about two woodcutters who went out early one day to chop trees. One of them worked as hard as he could all day long without a break until the sun went down: hour after hour of hard labour. He didn’t stop once, even though he could hear his friend in the distance taking regular rest breaks. Check here
At the end of the day, the first man was amazed to see that his pile of wood, despite him never having stopped work even for a minute, was smaller than his lazier friends’. When he asked his friend how he’d done it he replied ‘every time I took a break I sharpened my axe!’
